During your first ketamine session, you’ll be in a private, quiet setting with professional oversight. The session usually lasts 40–60 minutes. You’ll likely receive the medication via IV infusion while seated or lying down comfortably. You may be offered an eye mask and headphones to help you turn inward.
As the medicine begins to take effect, many people describe a feeling of lightness, a dreamlike state, or a sense of emotional openness. You might revisit memories, feel waves of emotion, or simply feel relaxed and distant from your usual thoughts. These responses are all normal.
You’ll be monitored by a clinician throughout the session, and safety is a top priority. After the session, you may feel tired or emotionally reflective. Most people return home to rest, journal, or simply decompress.
There’s no “right” way to feel during or after a session. The most important thing is to stay open, nonjudgmental, and gentle with yourself. Your provider will help you process anything that arises and ensure you’re supported throughout the experience.
