Can Ketamine Help Me Stop Taking My Current Medications

One of the most common hopes people have is: “Maybe this means I can stop taking antidepressants.” For some, ketamine does create enough improvement that a careful reduction in medication is possible. But it’s not a guarantee—and it’s not something to rush.

Ketamine works differently from traditional meds. It doesn’t need to build up in your system. Instead, it creates a temporary state of openness and neuroplasticity that helps the brain begin healing from a different angle.

That said, antidepressants and mood stabilizers are often continued during ketamine treatment. They may even work better afterward because your brain is more responsive.

If your symptoms dramatically improve and stay stable after the ketamine series, you and your provider can revisit your medication plan and consider a gradual taper.

But never stop meds abruptly or without guidance—it can cause withdrawal, mood swings, or destabilization.
