Preparing for Ketamine Treatment: Medications, Health Conditions, and What to Tell Your Provider

Before beginning ketamine therapy, it’s important to review your current medications and health history with a provider who understands both psychiatric and physical risks.

Certain medications—like benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax, Klonopin), stimulants (e.g. Adderall), and lamotrigine—may reduce or alter the effects of ketamine. You may be advised to taper, pause, or adjust timing for some of them. Most antidepressants and blood pressure medications are usually safe to continue.

In terms of medical history, always share if you’ve had:

  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart issues

  • Seizures or epilepsy

  • Bipolar disorder (especially with mania)

  • Psychosis or dissociation

  • Recent substance misuse

These don’t automatically rule you out, but they do require a tailored plan. Emotional honesty is just as important—if you’ve been dealing with trauma, instability, or big life stressors, we’ll want to build in extra support.

A proper screening ensures your experience is safe, supported, and aligned with your goals. Don’t leave anything out—we’re here to help, not judge.
